Daydreams of an outdoor firepit area

So recently my husband and I acquired 4 benches (with seats) from his work. They decided they wanted to upgrade their indoor bench/seating area to something else. Us being the DIY type, jumped at the chance to acquire these pieces. So here is our plan:

Basically arrange the benches in a square around a firepit that we hope to build in the backyard. We have to stain/prep/paint the wood benches so they are more outdoor friendly, as well as cover the seats with more water-resistant fabric.

A friend online suggested that we turn one of the holes where a seat goes and make it a spot for a cooler to be stuck in (great suggestion btw), so we might end up doing that with one of the benches (maybe the small one?).

So we have great plans for this, but I'm so nervous as I've never worked on such a big project for an outdoor space. Anyone have any suggestions or tutorials on making furniture more outdoor friendly?

Thanks for stopping by. Feel free to see some of my inspirations for the future space on my pinterest board for the Yard/Patio, or follow me on Pinterest in general!

Other than that, we've been busy finishing up the bedroom decor and the hubs put up shelves in my craft room, so that is coming along nicely! Once these are more complete, I'll show pics! I've been also trying to figure out how to fixup our cruddy rusty storm doors. I think I might paint them, but not sure what color. What do you guy think? Right now it is white and the door is dark green. I'm thinking painting it the same color as the door (if I can find the paint), like ones I found on pinterest (see my yard/Patio board above).

Also, of course Wendy has been helping out around the house too! lol

Also, can I just say I've become completely addicted to "Supernatural" via Netflix. I have blown through almost all of the 7 seasons of episodes on Netflix within this month, and I don't know what I'm gonna do when I run out!

Anyways, have a great weekend all! Stay tuned for the recipe to my Valentine's Day Lemon Sugar cookies! :D

Looking back at 2012 and looking forward to 2013

Ok, I know lots of bloggers did this kind of post a good month ago, but I thought, after looking over my past year of projects to link up to a 2012 DIY contest, I thought I'd kind of do a roundup of my year in projects and talk about what I have in store for this coming year.

So, my top three projects from 2012 are these babies:

Now on to my top 5 re-pinned Pinterest items. Personally I find some of these quite interesting that they were repinned the most (of today). 3 cards, 1 scrapbook page and one gift. I guess I'm still getting in the groove of Pinterest- haven't had any earth shattering pinned items, but I'm getting there. Feel free to pin everything and anything from my blog-o people! If you want to see more of my projects that I've pinned, if that is easier, I created a My Projects pin board that you can surely repin from, or feel free to follow my boards on Pinterest over here.

1) Beer cake- ok this surprised me, since it was such a simple idea, but it was perfect for a guy present. It wasn't even a post all on its own, and was something I put together quick for a friend's birthday. But then again, I know I struggle with gifts for men all the time. So I guess everyone else had the same issue, hence why it was my top pinned project!

2) Christmas double scrapbook layout- was a fun layout and a double layout (which is kind of becoming unheard of in the pro-scrapbooking publications).

3) Christmas Happy Holiday kraft card- one of the many Christmas cards I made this year, so I'm glad ya'll liked it!

4) Fly away card- so this is the only top pin that isn't from this year, but it is probably one of my all-time favorite cards I've made thus far, especially since it was for a co-worker's surprise to his wife.

5) Peace, joy, love Christmas card- another card from this year's Christmas card extravaganza, and super fun to dream up. I LOVE PTI's Christmas tag stamp set that I used for this.

Overview of this past year, 2012:
I created a chalkboard from an old mirror, held a S'Mores party, made a dry-erase board and some new business cards, started planning out the rooms to our new house with Olioboard, made a headband holder, did scrapbooking projects at the Autism Crop, created a boat-load of reusable bags from old t-shirts, picked up some awesome finds at antique stores and thrift shops, finished my trash-to-treasure bar cart, created cake stands and a beer cake for a friend's birthday, revealed my bestie's wedding invite, scored more thrifty finds, showed off my father's day cards I sent out, checked out Chip It! and acquired our trash-to-treasure dresser, revealed the "Spooks and Scares" digital image set I created over at www.frenzified.com, went to CHA summer, helped hold a Beauty & the Beast/Parisian themed bridal shower for my bestie, made personalized mini suitcases for gifts to the crew of "The Music Man" where I played Marian, got my first project life package, was in my bestie's wedding and showed off some super fab projects and gifts for the event, bought our very first house, survived Hurricane Sandy in our new home, did a LOT of new projects in our new home including decorating for Thanksgiving then Christmas, sent out my massive amount of homemade Christmas cards, as well as created and sent out our 2012 year in review infographic letter. We also celebrated my hubs' grandfather's 75th birthday, I attended CropPink with my mom in October (and won the Pink Spirit contest with our SteamPink costumes), and rung in the New Year with a few of our closest friends with a New Year's dinner party.

So all in all, it has been a superfab year for projects! This 2013 year already I've decorated for Valentine's Day (with snowflakes!) AND finished our trash-to-treasure double dresser!

And now onto the future...
My plans for this coming year in projects and DIY and crafts:
  • Paint the chair/stools given to me by my co-worker for our breakfast nook in the kitchen (and finish adding the shelf table in there)
  • Find better wall decor for dining room
  • Finish our large clock made from old wood backing from vanity, for the living room
  • Find/finish living room decor (map for pinning where we've been and friends that live there? and/or shelf for faux mantel)
  • Pretty-up/finish 1/2 bathroom
  • Do SOMETHING with our front and back yard (flowers, firepit, new front-door appeal?)
  • Finish up wall decor for bedroom
  • Paint mirror for bedroom and repaint vanity & end tables
  • Update lampshades for bedroom
  • Finish decor in spare bedroom
  • Figure out what to do with hall bath
  • Finish wall decor for master bathroom
  • Organize and finish all the projects for the craft/office room (red polka dots?!!)
  • Lots of decorations for the holidays, projects for friends and family, and start planning a big 2013 New Year's party, since we didn't have a big one this year.
I know, a lot of plans, but even if I get a few done, I'll be happy.
So, check out my DIY projects from 2012, as well as many other cool projects from others over at the big contest at Not Just a Housewife.

Anyways, happy January and here is to a good year of DIY projects!

Crafty gifts and wedding bells

So my best friend got married to my husband's best friend this past weekend. It was a lovely weekend in the hills of farmland, with friends and fun. I had a lovely awesome time, and enjoyed the entire getaway from the usual work stuff.
Here's some pics from the wedding (these were by me) at the Glasbern Inn:

(The hubs and I at the reception)

So here is what my husband, a friend of ours, and I cooked up for their wedding gift. They are the type of people that if they really want something, they probably already have it, so we decided to go more thoughtful. I apologize that I stink at tissuepaper placement. And the purple ribbons- all from her bridal shower (kind of an inside joke- I promised her I'd find a way to use that ribbon someday, and I did!)

I created the framed piece of artwork that includes their birthdays, first date, engagement, and wedding date all in one lovely framed graphic. After seeing similar ones on Pinterest like this one, I knew I could do something similar on my own with their dates and wedding colors (green and silver). I scored this awesome frame at Michaels, that is silver but shiny so it looks black and silver at times. Later I'll try to upload the original file for anyone who wants a similar printable (once I figure out what's best to upload the file to)

We also got some things together for a "date night"- 3 bottles of wine and 3 gift cards (1 for movie tickets, 1 for dinner, and 1 for ice cream). I also made a card, as well as a mini album.

The mini album was the most labor intensive piece, as the mini album I chose for the base was sort of tricky- it had pages that flip up, as well as over. Here's the layouts and cover. The cover is my fav.

Some pages I like more than others (but's that's how life is, right?). It was a lot of work to put it all together, but I knew it was something I wanted to do. I originally was going to try to do their wedding colors, but that just didn't happen. ;(

Overall the wedding was beautiful and fun. Oh, and the brooch bouquet that we collected brooches for at her bridal shower (see post here) turned out amazing! Her matron of honor did a fabulous job putting it together.

Other great DIY things included the centerpieces the bride and groom put together (apothecary jars and the main table had a dome like that of the beauty and the beast rose!), the bride's mom made her veil and shoes, and her necklace was an antique store find we found while wandering a shop after a day of dress fittings.
It was a blast and I can't wait for the awesome pictures from the photographer come out. So fab!

Oh, I also got this AWESOME steampunk necklace as a thank you for being a bridesmaid (with matching gear earrings) so I am determined to put together a steampunk costume for this year's Halloween. I am in search of some super cool goggles and all things steampunk. Here's my inspiration board for my ideas for the costume.

Anyways, with the housing situation being pushed back to October 29th (we hope) sadly all my Halloween decor hopes went out the window, so if I get to it, I'll try to do a little bit around here, but no promises- which makes me super sad, as Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday! *tears*
I just hope it all actually happens this time! We've been waiting for almost 8 months on this house! (Short sales are anything but short- but that's a post for later).

Lastly, I tried out this super cool program online called Floorplanner, where you can create 3d and 2d models of whatever type of home you want. I basically did it to test out some ideas on furniture arrangement in our future home, though I totally was guesstimating on the dimensions of everything (rooms and furniture). Was a fun waste of a few hours a few days ago. hehe

Oks, time for bed, got work in the afternoon.
Laters!
